The surge means nothing if there is no political reconciliation. Good luck with that one!

It is kinda meaningless, however, if their government was in shambles, and security improved to the point where, say, there were no more car bombs, then the surge would be extremely useful. If the violence were to stop for a good period of time, then I would see no reason to maintain a troop presence in Iraq.

Well now that the weapons have disappeared both teams are armed and they will resort to Bush style diplomacy. The surge is meaningless.

How can any military option succeed without Iraqi political progress? And while it is 120 degrees every day in Iraq, and our soldiers are sweltering in that heat with 40 lb. packs, the Iraqi parliament goes on vacation???? Doesn't anyone think that's wrong? Isn't anyone angry that Americans are being killed while the Iraqis are on vacation? Where's the outrage?

defense secretary gates "warns of 'protracted' stay" (cnn.com 8/5/07). pres bush/commander in chief decided on the "surge", decided on the war, will not end the war during his term. so, the "surge" is meaningless.

Rove… “now that Iraq's political crisis is growing”? It has grown; it’s shed its fruit and died off again.

World War II didn’t take “this long” - for a reason.

There were fewer American deaths in Iraq last month, but the number of Iraqis who died went higher than ever. How is that working, who is it working for, and towards which goal?!

the surge will work regardless of the political situation. at some point we will have to stand down but whatever political entity is in place will still have to deal with the US military. things will be much calmer. just because this iraqi gov. is having issues does not mean all of the gov. is going to be sacked. time is our friend.

Quite the contrary. The surge is quite meaningful. It is working. No one can deny that.
Political instability will continue for a time, just as the war continues.
Look on the bright side rather than looking for negatives. It is all coming together.
