Billie Holiday is beyond amazing. Such a fascinating life, such a tragic end. She is still popular but doesn't get half the credit she deserves. In death she became an icon but she died virtually penniless. Liver failure due to alcoholism I believe. So sad. I can listen to her songs all day long and never get bored. Definetly worth checking out.

Sidney Poitier instantly comes to mind. He was instrumental in the building of credibility for Black Actor's in Hollywood. He was the first African American to win the Academy Award for Best Leading Actor. He's famous for his portrayal of strong, dignified characters that boldly defied common stereotypes of the time. He paved the way for African American actors of today such as Denzel Washington, Jaime Foxx, Don Cheadle and Halle Berry among others.

Hattie McDaniel was the first ever African American to any Academy Award when she won the Oscar for best supporting role for Gone with the Wind. She appeared in over 300 films, and was i believe the first black woman to sing on radio.

Lena Horne. That woman was class personified. Josephine Baker was a big star in Europe. Sadly, black actors were not given enough credit in those days. It is difficult to even find their films.
