new to macs. Do you need to defrag at all?

You usually don't, because of how OS X's file system works, but you may want to every once in a (comparatively long) while. OS X doesn't actually come with any utilities for this, so you'll want to look at something like iDefrag. One thing to note is that unlike Windows' defrag application, you'll need to create a bootable CD with iDefrag on it, and run iDefrag from that, as it won't let you defrag the hard drive if you're currently booted from it.

It's pretty much only necessary when using Winblows.
