A great but complex question in that there are probably multiple reasons.

One of the most important and THE one that was so decisive in 2000 and 2004 ,was not economic issues but rather SOCIAL ISSUES.

In the past two Presidential elections, the 50 million or so Christian fundamentalist (The religious right)voted like lemmings almost totally as one bloc SOLELY on the social issues of abortion, homosexuality etc.

These fundamentalists would have voted Republican even if in doing so that were voting against their own ECONOMIC self interests.

These "fundies" are in many respect a very dangerous group in America for many reasons but in particular because they VOTE ON RELIGIOUS GROUNDS not secular grounds notwithstanding that our society is a SECULAR SOCIETY.

If any one group can claim to having elected Bush ,it is the "fundies" who elected Bush President period.

Because they bought into that load of BS that Reagan came up with. You remember, the trickle down theory. If the rich get richer then eventually the money will trickle down to the poor. The only problem with that is the excess money the wealthy receive is reinvested off shore so they don't have to pay taxes on it. Face it, liberals aren't as self centered or egotistical as the repewbs. I make around $23,000 a year, I pay a higher tax rate than Warren Buffet but I still donate time and money to charity's because I care about my fellow man. Repewbs care only about themselves, that is why all of them say well I worked for the money I want to keep it. They are just materialistic, uncaring a-holes. I am sure I will be called a bleeding heart liberal but at least I put a human life above the dollar. God bless everybody, not just the USA.

I voted Republican when I was out of work. You might be shaking your head but understand that I wasn't looking for governemtn to create more for me than the opportunity to get back into the workforce. While it would have been nice for the government to have helped me more I wasn't looking for an entitlement. I wasn't looking for some cheap training program to drive trucks or assemble parts. I was then and am in I.T. and was out of work because my company got swallowed up by a bigger company. I voted Republican in order for some other company to get the leg up they needed to hire an experienced sysadmin. In this case, I wanted someone to be more business friendly.

because people have been brainwashed into believing that the rich are only republicans when Kerry, Kennedy, and Clinton are all super liberals and super rich, so are all the liberal hollywood celebs, that feel that they have to force their liberal opinions on people, like everyone wants to hear them just because they are actors.

I make $25k a year, so I'm not rich, and I always have and always will be a republican.

I like people working for their money, government aide is fine, but when it's free handouts and there is no incentive for the people to stop getting the handouts then what's the point.

I'm for fighting people who attacked us, and not waiting for them to come here and attack us.

I'm for not penalizing the people who make the economy go, they still have expenses like you and me even if they are rich, and even when they get a tax break they still pay more taxes than you and I. I think there should be some middle ground on that though.

That is why, most people after college professors try to turn them into liberals they realize that they are more Republican in values.

you have hit the economic part of the argument on the head.
republican policies tend to make for more rich (or otherwise successful) people. the Democrats make more poor.
the more poor (or otherwise victimized) folks there are, the more Dem votes, the more surccesses the more republican votes.
the question is why any poor person would vote for the party dedicated to keeping them that way?

What do you mean. I am not rich and vote republican. My main reason is that I do not want to live in a socialist system ex. democrat. Out of all the "rich" people griping about tax cuts for the rich, how many return their refunds and volunteer to pay more in taxes? NONE that I have heard of.

I am far from rich but I do have a job and I want to keep every dime I make. I don't align myself with any political party but I do vote Republican more than I do Democratic because if I MAKE THE MONEY, then I should be able to KEEP MY MONEY.

And seriously, the only people that should vote for Democrats are unemployed people and welfare recipients. They are the only ones who benefit from the Democratic party.

Because under a republic we all stand a chance to do better for our selves and our future decendants. Many democrats are communists. They don't want to earn or work hard for anything. Rember those who promise to take from others will eventjaly take from you. The richest will mislead you into thinking its for your own good.as long as they have power. They will hide their money in other countries but take from others to give to some of the poor so they can get it back.

My grandparents were never rich a day in their life and they voted Republican for their whole life. They saw that the issues they believed in strong foreign policy, less government, moral values, less taxes not a huge all encompassing central government that democrats believe in.
