Every baby is different. I started my baby with cereal in her bottle at three months because she was a fairly large baby at birth, so she ate more than other babys at her age. Doctors want you to hold off until the baby is atleast 4months, and to start off with 1tbs per 2oz of formula. So if her 3month old is drinking 6oz of milk, your niece needs to only measure in 3tablespoons of cereal. If you truly feel as though she is giving the baby too much cereal in her bottle, you may want to suggest spoon feeding the cereal to the baby from a bowl, instead of through a bottle that way the baby can get her nutritional needs from the formula, and get her full from the cereal seperately and will stop eating when he/she's full. The cereal can get too thick and it will be really hard to suck through that little hole in the nipple. And if she does decide this, don't forget the baby still needs her bottle of formula along with the cereal.
I am just a little confused though, is she giving her baby a 6oz bottle of formula with cereal, or 6oz of cereal in her bottle of formula? If it is truly a whole 6oz of cereal in her bottle, then hell yes it is too much!! That baby is about to burst.

Maybe once a day before bed, but for sure not every bottle. Even once a day is maybe inappropriate for 3 months old. I think most people don't start any kind of cereal until 4-5 months.

My son is now 6 months old and we have been putting cereal in his bottles since 3 months at the advice of our doctor..for excessive gas and spit-up...1 dry formula scooper full of cereal to bottle of 6 to 8 oz. non-powdered formula. I won't recommend anything to anyone else(that's ur pediatricians job) but I will say the it helped my son a great deal and he is healthy and happy and right at his target weight...They need to consult with the doctor about proper feeding.

If the baby can tolerate it then yes give her a little. I did with my kids juts so they would sleep better on a fuller stomach. And wouldnt wake up so much during the night. If the baby is doing ok on then just do it a little at a time. But I dont think she is crazy. You said your kids are grown...well alot of thinks have changed since they were little as well as even 8 and 9 yrs ago when mine were babies.

Her baby's pediatrician should have mentioned to her that she shouldn't give the baby cereal at such a young age, but many mom's ignore the warnings, in hopes that the baby will be satisfied for longer periods of time and sleep through the night.

The AAP recommends holding off on all solids until 6 months of age. Cereal can then be introduced followed by vegetables and fruits.

Does her baby have GERD? I had to give my baby cereal with his feeds because he has bad reflux. He would vomit after every feeding. The cereal provides what the doctors call gluing to help the baby hold down a feed. You might want to ask her if her baby has GERD and maybe that's why she is feeding her cereal. Also if the baby does have GERD is she seeing a Gastrointerologist?

I was told not to give my baby cereal in her bottle. It really doesn't make her feel fuller.. and all it does is give her extra calories. Dr. said to start feeding her cereal with a spoon so that she could get familiar with it. But he completely discouraged putting cereal in her bottle.

I gave my son cereal in his bottle at 2 months. I checked with my doctor any she didn't have a problem with me doing this. Didn't hurt him at all. It helped him sleep better. Just hope your niece isn't making the bottles too thick.
