A mixture of Love and Death. There are a few poems that come to mind with this, and they are some of my favorite poems. There is Porphyria's Lover by Robert Browning here is a link to it http://www.scholars.nus.edu.sg/landow/victorian/authors/rb/porphyria.html
I also really liked another poem that I can't remember the title or the author to, that goes along those lines. There is such juxtaposition in those subjects that causes a strange harmony.

Anything that shows us being human...picking your nose, drooling on the pillow, doing something we know is bad for us, but doing it anyway. These are called "human condition" poems and can be touching, amusing, embarrassing or sad...because that's the human condition: emotion. Angst is okay, but it's easily overdone; anger is only good in small portions; love will rot your teeth with sweetness; passion gets me frustrated (my wife is on a ship thousands of miles away) and the other emotions affect me in different ways. But the one thing they have in common, is that they describe how it is to be human...and the ones that do it best, do it while we're not looking...the photograph taken just as we turn around, before we see the camera..."that" is what I like, because it's honest beyond our ability to consciously be so.

I actually don't have a favorite subject for poetry. Love poetry and death poetry tend to ring false to me; there is much dross through which to sort. I suppose any poem that depicts something in life to which I can relate, or which is so vivid that I can see it as though I did relate to it, is a plus. Mostly, though, command of the language takes precedence over any particular subject for me.

Odd...I was planning to ask a question just like this. Anyway, I like poems of nostalgia, poems on death, or Poe-type poems, but poems on love aren't my type.

one of my favourite poems is gm hopkins' 'pied beauty'. it is about things with freckles.
i also love chris smart's poem about his cat jeoffry.
i don't think you can have one 'best' topic for a poem: it depends what matters to the poet.
