Where could i find more info about this interesting subject? Let's say a kid is born left-handed, but his parents force him to use his right hand, to be "normal, like everyone else". I know the hand thing is a result of some reversed influence from the brain, but what happens with/inside the brain if forced otherwise?

There is an interesting research article that came out today, that shows there is a genetic factor in left-handedness. The reason some people refuse to use their right hand is the DNA forces them to.

I am left handed, and I do not think anyone ever tried to force otherwise, but writing is the only thing I do left handed and if I had to I could write with my right hand. I guess that makes me ambidextrous. I would not think it would be a good idea to force the child to be right handed even though it is not always easy being left handed.

A generation or so ago, it was common for parents to try and make their left-handed children use their right hand. Most things are designed for right-handed people. However, it's no longer popular or even accepted for parents to encourage a left-handed kid to use his or her right hand. It would be the same difficulty a right-handed person would have, trying to use the left hand. I don't think anything would happen within the brain itself, but it would be a very awkward and uncomfortable situation to try and change what is natural for you, whether it is right or left-handedness. Some folks are ambidexterous, which means they are comfortable and competent using either hand, but those folks are rare. I'd say go with whatever feels natural. It makes no difference in the final analysis.

They eventually learn to write right handed, or they became ambidextrous. As would happen if your left-hand were damaged and you had no Choice. That is how it was done in the past, because writing left handed had a tendency to smear their writing. It only made sense. People are resilient and adaptable, nothing adverse would happen in the brain. That's another false assumption

I have heard of cases where parents, teachers and so on have insisted that children must write or eat with thier right hand when they are left handed.
I think that they become *both* handed, but still was far better left handed.

It has no known other effect on thier brain.

Of course, I am not sure what the reason behidn them forcing them to do this was, as it serves no purpose that I can possibly think of.

Some of the comments are a little strange, but I am a leftie who does many things right handed, some quite naturally, and some because it is easier while living in a right handed world. (Plus left handed sissors suck!) I batted righty, fish felty and reel right handed. I grew up when people wanted to change you if you were born lefty, but my parents did not believe in changing, so here I am, very ambidextrous as a result. Hoohah for lefties!!

I had a great aunt who was born left handed. Back then they thought that was a sign of stupidity or something so in school they trained her to write with her right hand. The result was that she could write with both hands equally well.

psychologically i wouldn't know. but i'm chinese and in a lot a places traditionally speaking (not now a days, really) it was quite common to for a leftie to be forced to become a rightie. and as far as i know it did no harm. i actually know a few kid who were forced to use their right hand when they were born lefites and they're perfectly normal. although one of the guys i kno who is like that also plays volleyball and when he spikes and serves he uses he left hand, but he writes with his right. i think that when a left is forced to use thier right hand nothing really happens to them mentally speaking. they just end up training the motor skills in thier non-dominent hand, thats all. i mean it should still feel natural for them to use their left hand in situations they didn't train their left hand for. also there are circumstance where a person can permenently disable thier dominent hand and their would jsut adjust to that all you have to do is train you're self to be ambidextrious. and doing that does nothing to damage your pyche so why should using you're non-dominent in other cases? and also most of the time this is done to them at a very young age so i would suppose they just grow used to it.

I was never "Forced" to use my right hand, but my environment oftem demanded it. For example: When I played baseball, all my friends had right handed gloves, so I got used to catching right handed.

Other than being a lunatic, I really don't think I was negatively affected.

I WAS left-handed til my teacher taught me to use my right hand. To this day it still makes me mad cause that wasnt fair to me. I had to use those BIG pencils. I do stutter a little but not sure if there is a connection. It takes me a while to catch on to some stuff especially all this technology.
