Hamsters really aren't the good pets that people think they are. They can easily fit into small spaces which makes it easy for them to escape and hard to find. They are also nocturnal and therefore don't like to be disturbed during the day. The are more likely to bite if they are disturbed too. I realize not all hamsters are like this and it is a generalization.
On the other hand, guinea pigs make fun, hardy pets. They are fairly easy to care for, sociable, cute and if you get a female they really don't smell. I love guine pigs.

Guinea pigs are better and smarter than hamsters. Just to clear this point up, it is worth explaining the differences between hamsters and guinea pigs. While a hamster looks like a furry mouse with no tail, a guinea pig is much bigger, easier to handle, and love to get attention. Hamsters are highly active, but only at night and they are solitary creatures and like to be alone. Also, they don't mind being handled, but will bite hard when they are cross. Guinea pigs, on the other hand, rarely bite and are very social animals. They bond closer to their owner, unlike a hamster would, as well. Guinea pigs are so cute and wonderful because they have more affection toward their owners than a hamster. Besides, hamsters are too small to handle. If you pick the hamster up and hold it for a couple of minutes, chances are, it will try to get away and will be hard to find. A guinea pig will sit on your lap, and most likely will cuddle to get your attention. There's a bunch more! As a hamster will need numerous of care, it's cage could get to that possibility of smelling. A guinea pig's cage, though, usually does not smell as bad as a hamster's. My experience is that, guinea pigs are friendlier than hamsters. I always get bitten by hamsters. I've been nipped at by pigs, but never had the skin broken. Beyond that, a lot has to do with the personality of the animal, both for pigs and hamsters. Some pigs are great lap-pigs and love to be held. On the dark side, hamsters have a short life span. :( Hamsters, sadly, can be aggressive and bite at you for no reason, and this is 100% true. As far as I've looked back on this question, so many people I know agree. I've asked my mom, dad, brother, sister, and my friends, and they all said guinea pigs. Not even ONE said a hamster, and I totally agree, as well. Why a hamster? They're not even good pets. Pets, to me, are to be affectionate, easy to handle, not aggressive, and absolutely intelligent, and I don't see one of those skills in a hamster, no effence. Other people can say a hamster, and that's fine. I don't argue, because hamsters are cute, but people shouldn't look for a pet in only 'cuteness,' because some 'cute,' animals can turn out to be aggressive...a guinea pig is the best choice!

It depends on the kind of friendship you want to have with your pet. A guinea pig lives longer at 6-8 years and a hamster is 2-3 years. GP's are active during the day and hamster are nocturnal preferring to come out at night.

Good luck with your choice and don't forget to do some research on your own before deciding!

It all depends on what you want. If you want a pet that likes to be held and cuddled then a guinea pig is for you. Guinea pigs do need a lot of attention though. If you don't have time for that then a hamster may be the one for you.

Hamsters are alot easier, they sleep all day. So if you want something to play with get a guinea pig, they also make really cute squeaks!!
