It depends on how much you use it. Heavy usage --- lots of people swimming in it, at night, after everyone is done swimming. That way it's ready for the next day. Also, talk to your friends and neighbors who have pools. they can speak to you from experience. They can reccommend a pool supply store that is truthful and not trying to sell you every chemical UNDER THE SUN that you don't need.

We have an oval above ground pool and shock it once a week during the high use high temperature weeks. When the temperature is in the 70s and the pool is not getting a lot of use we shock every other week, or after an especially heavy rain storm. We do not use the type of shock you have to dissolve in a bucket of water before you put it in the pool, it is messy and it never dissolves all the way. We just buy the kind that will instantly dissolves when it hits the water.

Above ground pools with the ridgid sides are made to be up year round. If in a cold area, you just drain the water down below the skimmer and drain out the filter. Dismanteling an above ground pool would cause stress on the liner and replacement would be necessary.

I only shock mine when I open the pool and if I had to add a large amount of water. Otherwise I just keep plently of chlorine in it.
