The best way is to not do it. Odds are very good your water hardness is fine for your fish and adjusting it will only stress the fish. Also remember, if you increase the hardness in the tank significantly, you will have to match that when you do water changes.
In case you really do need to alter the hardness, a bit of crushed coral in the filter is a good way to have a slow, steady and low stress increase in hardness.
Of course, increasing hardness will also increase pH

Even if the water is very hard, you might not need to do anything. Our water is very hard (off the charts when I test) and I've never lost a fish - Oscars, plecos, red dwarves, silver dollars). Changing the hardness of the water can be worse for them, as it can shock and kill them.
You can put peat in your filters (talk to your local fish store) and it will soften the water, but I wouldn't do it if it isn't necessary.
If you are wanting to do this because you are losing fish, I'd look elsewhere for the causes first. Is the tank cycled? Am I adding things to the tank that I shouldn't, etc.
Good Luck.

Go with the soft. The fish won't know the difference and you won't get that white mineral buildup around the top of the tank. Added: Yeah, fish-face there is technically correct. I've used soft water for years without problems, BTW. As long as you monitor the levels and adjust accordingly you're good to go.

Adding rocks that are limestone or calcium carbonate(crushed coral) to the filter. Here's a good link:
