Get a job - try babysitting or a paper route - or cutting lawns - or just ask your parents if there is anything you can do to earn the money to pay for the phone. A big reason most parents say NO is because of the potential problems that can occur with the ownership of a cell phone. If you are willing to pay the cost of the monthly Billl perhaps your parents might be willing to take a chance that you will not run up a bill of several hundred dollars. My son ran up a bil of over $1,000.00 in one month, I am willing to bet your parents have heard of similar horror stories. You want privileges of a cell phone, but are you wiling to accept the responsibility? You need to convince your parents that you will be responsible and are willing to prove it by earning the money required for the monthly bill (do you even know the poeential costs). Try writing out a plan that would show the anticipated cost and where the money will come from to pay for the cell phone. If you are not willing to try to earn the money then you are not responsible enough to own a cell phone yet - that is the parent in me talking

You can get free cell phones and pretty cheap plans don't get those minute by minute like virgin mobile they will just screw you and your parents over and then they really wont be happy. Just tell them they can check in on you while you're out so they will know you're safe and tell them you can find a free phone and just get a part time job if you dont already have one and you could easily make the payments.

Tell them that some weirdo follows you around every where when they're not around, and you're kind of scared, so you need a cell phone in case you need to call 911. Also mention to them that prepaid ones are good, and you could only pay 100 dollars a year. Tell them that you'll only use it for emergency. Since I have one, I just call my friends for about 3 minutes, and ask if they can come over, but we don't chat a lot. That works for me!

17 is such a late age to get a cell phone. I got my first cell in 5th grade lol. Well, I told my mom that i would be responsible and that i would need it to call her to let her know i'd be at a friends house or that i'd like a better way to communicate with my friends. I suggest you pay for it too.

Tell them that you will use it wisely, for emergency calls especially when you are in bad situation and in need for their advises, and for serious calls with friends and relatives .
Tell them you will be aware of the expenses, and you will do your best to be the minimum and within the budget they put for you.
Let them give you a try for a month or so and let them evaluate it.
But before you ask your parents for a mobile be sure that you will be honest about every thing you will tell them.

You can get an inexpensive one for about $30 that costs 10c/minute to call people. At that rate, you could do baby-sitting and other odd-jobs to pay for it yourself.
If you pay for it, or for a big part of it, your parents are more likely to help out.
