I'm pretty sure the first time any of you heard the word "Neo" you heard "Neo-Nazi" so that's what you associate with Neo-conservatism. "Neo" actually just means "new"; so calling conservatives "neocons" is actually a compliment, considering one of the biggest criticisms on conservatives is that they are out of date and old-fashioned.

Basically, since the term "Neocon" isn't an insult, why do you Yahoo!s use it as one?

I'm sort of confused by many of your answers...especially the one who said Neo Nazi's were a good thing. Uhhh...

I've seen some questions linking the word Neocons to Neo-Nazi, that's where I got the idea that many of you seem to associate the two; of course, we all know that conservatives don't want to kill all Jews, blacks, and gays. Maybe rough them up a little, but not kill ;-) not really though, that was joke.

I think freepress's answer is very expressive of why I asked this question.

Damn, ngdbill. Big words don't make you intelligent. "Ooooh he used manifest..." you sure showed me. I like your link, yes, its very informative. Yes, Wikipedia, excellent scholarly source. An encyclopedia anyone with a keyboard can create, I'm sure its all perfectly accurate (rolls eyes).

I've given the "this asker knows nothing" response to a few questions myself, but I do that to the "Did U kno taht Bush n ChENEy R acutally AlIENS form MaRS??" questions. I'm a little biased obviously, but I doubt my question fits in that territory, especially considering the question is not "What does Neocon mean," which would imply that I don't know, the question was "Why don't Yahoo!s seem to know what Neocon means" which means I would have to know what it means before I question others' use of it.
You've still yet to prove me as ignorant as you claim; how is "New Conservative" an insult, even if it was, as you pointed out, meant to be one? Just because I call you a fire hydrant...

2007-08-06 15:26:59 · update #2

...in an insulting tone does not mean that "fire hydrant" is now a swear word.

See calling people ignorant doesn't work, if all you do is call them ignorant. Proving them to be ignorant (and Wikipedia, sadly, informative as it is, proves nothing) would be much more helpful.
I'm really appalled at the level of derision you showed. I know I'm wordy but I usually don't spend 1600 characters of Added Details on one person's post. You did shock me, so good job, but you didn't prove me wrong or ignorant. But thanks for answering anyway, at least I can understand your post unlike most of the worngly spleledd poSTs on hear taht makes n0 scense.

actually most of us knew neo con meant new conservative, it's not a secret. They are called this because with the government spending they have different ideas then the traditional conservative viewpoint. The reason people consider it an insult is Bush is the leader of the neo cons.

I never even though of neo nazis, Maybe neo from the matrix, but never neonazis. It does fit though

"Neocon" is short for Neoconservative who is someone who follows the specific political philosophy described in the link below by the “godfather” of Neconservatism, Irving Kristol.

The PNAC group consists of neocons and their policies outline a lot of neocon thinking. Neocons like low taxes, don’t mind budget deficits and promote an aggressive foreign policy. Many of the people in the Bush administration are neocons.

The pejorative use of the term derives from the actions of the Neoconservatives in the Bush administration.

Yes. I do know what Neo-con means. I also know that the ideological founder of the neo-con movement was a (German) naturalized US citizen/political Science professor.

I don't particularly use as a perjurative. But that doesn't manage to stop quite a lot of neo-con types from using "liberal" as a perjurative somewhat equivalent to "pinko-commie-rat".

And while we may share certain ideological similarities, not even J. Edgar Hoover could find a shred of hearsay to back up his paranoid beliefs.

No, most people are not as ignorant as you yourself have mainifested yourself to be in your post and know that the prefix "NEO" means new.

This asker is simply spewing garbage.See URL below that explains in excruciating detail what neo-conservatism is .

In respect to this asker's statement that "NEOCON" is NOT an insult ,he simple reveals his/her ignorance and de facto renders everything he says on this subject totally irrelevant.

In fact this term was COINED and FIRST used in a blatant derisive manner by the American democratic socialist MICHAEL HARRINGTON.

To this day knowlegable informed people regard this term as "an insult" exactly as it was when first used.

Ignorance is bliss.

i dont understand why you think neo (meaning new) is necessarily a good thing. I GUESS BY THAT LOGIC (THAT LOGIC CLEARLY MEANING YOURS, NOT MINE) neo-nazi is sort of a compliment since they advanced to the point of not slaughtering jews and catholics - they just hate their existence.

i also dont understand what is so outdated and old-fashioned about small government, low spending and not invading nations for economic gain and not supporting one-world governments. in other words, what's wrong with these "old-fashioned" conservatives that war-mongerers and big govt facists (neo-cons) are making up for?

We know what it means. And it can be a compliment or an insult, depending on who is using it and in what context. It doesn't mean they are "new" as in up to date. It means they have a new ideology compared to traditional conservatives. For example, traditional conservatives would be strongly in support of low government spending and control. Neoconservatives seem to have less emphasis on those things, and in many cases, support big government and high spending.

Just so you will know, the 'neo-conservatism' that we are saddled with in 2007 is actually left-wing stuff left over from the 60's and 70's.

The 'neo-cons' would be considered to be left-wing radical pinko hippies in 1968.

it is not suppose to be an insult. the term neo- con is said sarcastically, because the new one look and act just like the old ones. SO YOU ARE A NEOCON?

The policies are what remind me of fascism, not the name.

Secretive gov't, removal of 4th Amendment protections, attacks on free speech, etc.

I know neo means new, I also know what conservative means-neo cons need a new name, one that actually applies to them.

President Bush brought new life to the White House!

It is such a ridiculous claim to say that he is like the "Nazis."

The word Nazi should not be allowed to use when referring to political parties, even when the Democrat party is the advocate of the Murder of unborn Children (over 60 million in the U.S. alone)

Still yet, it is an unfair word to use, since Nazis tortured people in much the same way as Saddam and the Saddamites did his own people. I don't think any one political party here in the U.S. would qualify for that position.
