"Following the crowd will get you nowhere."

Saw this on a churches marquee - a crowd of an organized religion/ Baptists.
What does it say about the organization itself if following the crowd will get you nowhere?

No, I am not an atheist, just thought it was a sort of an oxymoron.
Things that make you go Hhhhhmmmm........

I understand what it means - I just wanted to know if you understand the oxymoron it is stating - organized religion.....following the crowd.....just doesn't seem something I would announce on a church marquee. I believe it sends a mixed message. What do you think

I agree with you on the Marque being a perfect oxymoron except there is a further twist. Christianity is a religion where flocks and pastors abound. Sheep are gathered in flocks and many times follow a Judas Goat to slaughter as the Pastor stands by counting his money. The only way they could have made it even more perfect oxymoron would be if they would have exchanged crowd with Flock.

I agree, and I think it's really funny. By telling the masses not to 'follow the crowd' the are encouaging them to do exactly that.

But then I have a *huge* problem with organized religion.

I think what the marquee is trying to point out is that so many and especially young people are pulling away from God and religion. I get the message, to stay with God and your belief instead of pulling away with the crowd, but it does seem a bit of a muddled message.

I think what the statement is really trying to say is that religious organizations are not about following what other people do. Religion is a choice everyone has to make for his/herself. So just because someone is in an organization that doesn't imply he is following the crowd. Everyone in the organization made a decision for himself; they only function together because, perhaps, more could be done that way (community service, etc).

Maybe they're trying to say, our organization is great, but in the end you gotta think for yourself.

I agree, it does make you go hmmmmmmm. I mean, don't they want you to follow them and if many did follow them , wouldn't they be a crowd? Hmmmmmmm

A better saying would be, "Be the rock that changes the course of the river."

I think it means that if you're following the crowd you'll never get to do the things you want to do.Like Ben Franklin, he didn't find electricity by following the crowd.I guess this statement is just telling you to be yourself.

Just shows how disconnected from the mainstream the churches feel these days.

It may mean the minister wants to look at some funkier people in the pews...
