What most people don't realize is that superstitions are not some fad of the day--about 90% of the time. Superstitions are built on empirical reaccurence of actions and reactions. Sometimes this body of "Evidence of reality" is built throughout centuries of repitition.
The many "superstions" about salt begin to show up in Homers Illiad in 800 BCE and the latest I can find that is a reflection of Homer's words is a 1986 superstition that if you distrust someone who is leaving your home you throw a pinch of salt at their backs.

Everyone is superstitious to some point, but don't even realise it. When you mention superstitions, they try to avoid letting people know they are as badly superstitious as the next person, so they say stuff to take the attention away from themselves, hence the 'you're a nutter' phrase that gets thrown into the conversation. I usually say 'yup, but not as much as you!' that really pees 'em off! My un-superstitious fiance' never walks under a ladder, throws salt over his shoulder and deliberatley bangs his other elbow to keep bad luck away. If you dare point this out as being superstitious, he mutters and claims that he isn't because his Mum used to do it!! Sort the logic in that one! Take care, fellow nutter!

I am very superstitious and always have been, it is just that some people don't understand it.
I have seen a lot of things come true , for instance my sister was sweeping the the stairs and she also had a mop.
Then pretended they were a pair of crutches and was walking with a brush under one arm and a mop under the other arm.
When my mother saw her she said mocking is catching, my sister got hit by a motor bike
and was in crutches for six weeks.

Maybe it's a fear. By that I mean by having bad luck, or karma, or my personal buddy, "Murphy S. Law." Like putting a hat on the bed, or a purse on the floor, and of course, the dreaded boom swept on the feet. (Spit on the broom!) Sometimes I do think it's just a psychology thing.

Good question, but when good luck is said in that situation it is really meant as "Best wishes, my thought are with you." Or things like that. Rather then may the god's shine on you
