A condenser is used to change a gas to a liquid. On a water condenser steam is cooled into a liquid. In a gas condenser it would take different temperatures to condense different gases into their liquid state. Some research pointed out that gas condensers were used to clean some gases of certain impurities that would come out by changing the temperature.

A condenser is a piece of equipment that is used to cool a gas so that it condenses to a liquid. Usually, this is used in conjunction with distillation as a means of separating substances having different boiling points.

Often, water is used as the coolant to condense the vapors, so it might be called a water condensor. But any cool substance can be used, even plain air.
