I know this varies, but generally, when are most universities starting classes? Do most Universities/colleges start the first week of September? Later, earlier?

It varies widely by school. I started fall classes this week. :-(

The other local college starts back late August.

It varies. In the US, a lot of them start the Tuesday or Wednesday after Labor Day, the first week of September. Some are a few weeks earlier, some a few weeks later.

It really does depend

For schools in the northeast and many northern states, many schools start first week of September, just after Labor Day. But some start a bit earlier.

In the South and Southeastern US, many schools start in mid-to-late August. Some start a bit later.

In New York City, most universities start in September, but a few start in October.

My uncle just called me this morning on the way to taking his daughter to school, so apparently they are starting very early. We start on the 27th, but I know a lot of people don't start until labor day, which is a week later. People on quarter system dont start until late September. Basically, it is all over the map.

Schools on semester system usually start in late August. Schools on a quarter system usually start late September. Either way, the first term is usually over shortly before Christmas.
