They aren't really hungry, they just don't know when to stop eating. Goldfish will eat anything they can, and they won't stop until they are sick. Only feed them as much as they will eat in about 3 minutes. Do this 2 times a day, and your tank will stay cleaner.

Goldfish CANNOT eat human food. You're probably thinking of bigger fish in ponds and lakes that you can throw little pieces of bread at. But your fish will always be hungry, so it's very important NOT to over feed them.

Goldfish have no stomachs. The food, quite literally, goes right through them and as such, they will eat constantly if allowed. But, if fed too much, the food will back up in their intestines and cause several different types of deadly ailments and diseases. As such, it is best to only feed goldfish once a day and only what they can eat in 5 minutes. Remove all uneaten food after that time. While goldfish cannot eat human food such as bread and crackers and other seasoned and processed foods, they can eat healthy "human foods" such as fruits and vegetables. As a treat 2-3 times a week, in lieu of pre-soaked fish pellets or flakes, you can give them a wide variety of fruits, vegetables and protein-based treats such as brine shrimp, daphnia, bloodworms, tubifex worms, insect larvae, krill plankton, chopped earthworms carefully selected from your yard where no pesticides or fertilizers are used and chopped cooked eggs. Also, almost anything from the produce section in your supermarket. Romaine lettuce (no iceberg please), cooked fresh or thawed frozen shelled peas, melons, cucumber, grapes, oranges, spinach, parsley, dandelion leaves, broccoli, zucchini, strawberries, bananas. Parboil your tougher foods such as broccoli and carrots. Don't use anything that has been salted or flavored. Otherwise, try absolutely anything at all. They are very adventurous in the food department. You can also make them a gel food by combining baby food, such as strained peas, peas and carrots, spinach, bananas, etc. and mixing it with unflavored gelatin.
