I would recommend going to the Witches of the World section at http://www.witchvox.com and finding local shops. You might also talk to local pagans, as not all shops have Witchvox listings. Good places to meet people online are http://groups.yahoo.com , http://www.meetup.com and http://www.livejournal.com - just search for the name of your city plus the word "pagan" in their respective group search engines.
I strongly recommend going to an independent pagan or occult store instead of B&N or Borders or another chain store. The selection is better, and you're supporting a small business. Additionally, the chain stores only carry the most basic books; supporting independent stores also supports the sale of better books.
if worse comes to worst you can find a ton on Amazon.com, but I recommend the local shop first.
If you want suggestions, I have a book review blog at http://lupabitch.wordpress.com (check the left sidebar for links to other reviewers, too).

There is this book called "Book of Shadows" by Silver Raven Wolf. It's really amazing. It's filled with anything and everything you could possibly want to know or ask, every detail of practicing, history, practical application, helpful advice, everything. That's what I would look for at a local book store. You shouldn't need much else to get a great foundation on which to build your knowledge.

"any bookstore" might not be helpful. B&N has a lot of books listed in their "new age" section, but in reality most of it is garbage. Your best resource is going to be the interwebs, maybe if you have a book in mind a place like Barnes and Noble will order it for you from their warehouse and if it's not what you want when it comes in, you wont be obligated to purchase it.

I have many files of e-text on Pagan subjects. Check out my profile and its "fans" area. Most of those folks recieve Pagan files from me on a sporadic, but kind of regular basis. If you want to make me a contact and contact me about getting on the list you'll be welcomed. If not, no harm no foul......I know how careful people must be in this Christian dominated country.

There are articles, news and local listings there.
Oh, and as for books, can I reccomend staying away from most Llwellyn publishings? Silver Ravenwolf, Laurie Cabot, etc, are simply mind-numbingly trite and have serious accuracy issues. I would go with Ronald Hutton, Issac Bonewits, Starhawk, etc.

Try www.wicca.com, they have all kinds of spells, so make sure you stay away from the black witchcraft. You don't do black magic no matter what. It has a way to come back and it you 3 times fold!
