sp2 is not an anti-virues or anti-spyware program. sp2 fixes the bugs in xp. thats all it does. u still need an anti virus and anti spyware program.

You are comparing an operating system's Service Pack with a 3rd party software package that sits on top of the operating system - apples and oranges.
If you are specifically looking to compare NIS to XP's built in firewall, then XP's is more than adequate *if* you are plugged in to a router/firewall device - not directly into your high speed modem.
In general, NIS is very bloated for XP systems - there are several others that do a better job with less bloat.
As you mention, NIS contains much more than the firewall, it also has anti spam, anti spyware, anti virus, and privacy control. XP has some of that, but does not have AV at all, you'd still have to go the 3rd party route to get that piece.

Service Pack 2 is NOT a security software! It's just a bunch of updates for the various Windows XP security vulnerabilities that were earlier present. It won't protect your computer from active viruses and all in ANY way. To make your own lightweight internet security suite for no cost, refer to this page:

they are different things.
SP2 is a collection of fixes for things that should never have made it into the final build of the software (but unfortunately it is not a fix for all of those sort of things!). it is an OS update.
Norton Internet Security is a program than runs on top of your OS to attempt to prevent unwanted infections/accesses/etc.

install SP2 and run Norton also if you feel you must.

i avoid Norton products as they tend to be bloated and not particularlly useful in my situation.

SP2 has neither anti-virus nor anti-spyware.
You need SP2 with AVG Free from http://www.free.grisoft.com for anti-virus and Spybot search and destroy from http://www.spybot.info with service pack 2 for complete protection.

Lose the Norton it's a memory hog and that's why it slows your computer down.

Actually, Norton is better, just don't set the filter to high, and keep the Norton Firewall off, but keep your windows firewall on!!! And keep your computer defragged normally

I do not believe SP2 has any anti-anything (maybe firewall, but still not sure). I would suggest switching to AVG anti-virus. It's free, easy, and provides constant live protection. You can get it at:

Norton is NOT any good. If I could give you a thumbs down I would.

Use avast, it free and the best.
