We are about to purchase this car and someone told us not to purchase it unless the timing belt had been replaced. The car has 77,100 miles on it. Can anyone give me any information about this and why this is necessary? Thanks so much!!

As long as the engine is running well it is safe to purchase, however I recommend getting the timing belt replaced immediately, most manufacturers recommend timing belt replacements at 60K mile intervals.

Honda Accord's engines are interference fit engines. If the timing belt breaks, the pistons will hit the valves that are in the open position, bending the valves, and scarring the pistons. This is a major engine repair job.

A timing belt replacement will typically be about $200-$300 as opposed to an engine replacement $2000+

You'll be fine to buy it. Just replace the belt within a few months or whenever the owner's manual says you should. The timing belt controls the timing of the valves in the engine. The valves for the engine open by extending into the piston chamber. If the timing belt broke when the engine is running fast, some of the valves would be extended and in the path of the pistons. If they come in contact at high rpm the inside of the engine will be destroyed and you'll have to replace the whole engine.

Use this knowledge as a barganing tool. Try to get the dealer to lower the price buy telling them you know it will need work in the near future because of this problem. You can probably atleast lower it the price of replacing the belt.

Timing belt replacement is suggested at 90K and you do not need to replace the water pump unless it is leaking. Take the vehicle to your local dealership and have a per owners inspection done. This usually costs 60-100 dollars but you will be sure what does and doesn't need to be replaced. Timing belts aren't that expensive. You can usually get the job done for about 300-400 dollars. Good luck!

Who ever said that don't know much about Honda cars. Timing belt is due at 105K for this car. Yes, it is expensive service ($500) but you can still get the car at good price and enjoy it before you are required to change the belt. You usually replace the water pump in the same time.

the cheap oil exchange costs are for the main inexpensive oil and filters they have. in case you needed a greater useful clear out or possibly synthetic oil or adatives then which will improve the cost, and in case your automobile makes use of greater desirable than 4 qts of oil which will improve the cost too. i do no longer understand why the reccomended to have the oil flushed, yet sure, it is an adative which will improve the cost and that they probably value you a pair of greenbacks for the flush itself. i do no longer understand what style of automobile your husband has yet whilst he has something like a greater contemporary Honda or small Chrysler engine, or something that has the spark plugs interior the midst of the valve cover then sure it incredibly is achieveable he had oil leaking on the spark plugs and filling the spark plug holes around the suited of the plugs... rather now that i think of roughly it, i think of Toyotas do this rather undesirable once you pull the plug boot off there's a bucnh of oil around the plug. and if the oil replaced into rather leaking into the spark plugs, like into the combustion chamber, then you certainly in actuality could overhaul the engine to restoration this. yet sure it incredibly is achieveable they could take alot of stuff aside to restoration the oil leak, yet that still seems a sprint extreme. so a techniques as your timing belt, exchange it whilst the producer says to alter it, in the event that they say 60k then do it at 60k, i think of all Hondas are around 60k and that i think of all of them have a no interference engine if the belt breaks, yet another autos, and doubtless some Hondas have a "0 tolerance" timing belt so whilst it breaks it smashes the valves into the suited of the piston interior the cylinder and a minimum of you will could get a clean cylinder head if that happens. the timing belt provides no warning in the previous it breaks, the motor in basic terms stalls, and once you attempt to initiate it, it cranks incredibly rapid and sounds humorous... despite if it is not an interference engine, despite if it incredibly is yer screwed and the motor won't turn in any respect, the two way it won't initiate and you'd be stranded. In my oppinion changing the timing belt whilst the producer says to is the main needed element to do exactly whilst they say to alter it.
