That depends on the story. Most of the stories in a typical newspaper can be done in one day. Those are reflection of that day's events, and it's important to get current stuff in the paper.

Some stories require more work, though. It can be a few days, a week, a month on and off. It's a matter of the level of commitment by the newspaper.

Sunday newspapers are often filled with stories done in advance. Many are one-day efforts, but there are plenty of others that require some work.
