It's a picture of a white bear or dog. There is a red X that keeps flashing on and off over it. When I put the cursor on it no information is revealed as it does when I put the cursor over the icons.

If it looks like a white bear or dog it maybe monitoring software. They use it at some schools and offices to watch what people are doing. Other than that I am not sure.

the first thing I would do is take a look at Add/remove programs (or the equivalent in Vista if you're running that) and see if you can find a matching icon in the left hand column next to all the programs. If you can't find it there, look in your Start Menu. If it's a program, it has to be either in Add/remove programs or in the Start Menu. If it isn't, it's probably some stupid virus. I've seen some cases where it's just an icon in the tray saying I have a virus. But if nothing is coming, search Add/remove and the Start menu. If it's not there, scan for viruses and spyware. If not that, I'd call some tech support in. Good Luck!

Right click on it and see if there is a Properties box. Click on Properties and it "should" tell you what it is connected to.

then on the far left tab click start up...unclick the things you don't know or want to start up when your computer starts up....don't worry about unclicking important things...if they are important they will come back on the next start up
