How about a moratorium on “reporting” each other for a week? If we don’t like a question/answer, we can just move on to the next. I bet Yahoo would freak and we might even learn a little tolerance at the same time.

If so, what day should the moratorium start??

It's Monday where I live, and Monday sounds good to me!

Good idea!

Uh, you mean turn the entire site over to the trolls for a week?

WHY?

Here's what I think should happen instead: Yahoo puts the Guidelines up front, for everyone to easily find -- maybe even find a way to put them in everyone's face.

They explain, clearly, WHY each Guideline is there, and differentiate the Abuse Report system from the thumbs (a lot of people don't understand either system).

They carefully evaluate each report.

When someone has violated the Guidelines, they tell them what it was they did wrong, and why it's a no-no.

When someone sends a lot of bogus reports (where they disagree, but the person hadn't actually violated the Guidelines), they ding that person -- a lot of bogus reports and you're banned.

Reporting is NOT for people you disagree with, but for violations (rudeness, non-questions or non-answers, etc.).

The thumbs are for disagreeing, and people should use them for this purpose.

But not reporting real abuses?

Sorry, no can do.

I've seen this site when it's full of sludge, with hardly any real content at all, and I do NOT want it to degenerate back to that state.

The trouble is, a LOT of users just don't know what the rules are and what they're for and why they're there.

I'm not usually a pro-rule person, but I find all the rules to be legitimate -- necessary, in fact.

Abandoning the Guidelines isn't the answer.

I think that people who don't want to use this site as intended should simply go elsewhere; I do NOT think they should be allowed to completely take over this site.

I've been doing what you suggest for a LONG time. The only time I push that report button is when the question is filled with vile language and filth. Other than that, I let them all pass. After a while, you also learn who is here trolling and asks questions merely to bait. Many of those people I don't even bother with. You can pretty much anticipate the quality of their 'questions' and know not to bother. :)

You are so right, Robert! I was reported for responding to an individual's "question" which stated that because Obama sounds like Osama, Barak Obama must be the antichrist. I was reported for suggesting that the asker read books, which might enlighten him as well as improve his grammar. The only time I've reported someone was when they were actively encouraging cruelty to animals.
You're so right, it's silly and ridiculous to report someone just because you don't like their answer because it doesn't agree with your views.
Let's start today!
Have a great week! ;)

I report people who post racist comments and who cuss. So I will put a moratorium on reporting when people stop doing those 2.

Not reporting objectionable speech will invite more of it.

Are you ready for that?

I wouldn't mind if it were clever but that's pretty rare don't you think?
