No.
If, by 'liberal' you mean socialist, you are also wrong. There are many socialist democracies, the UK being one (check it out, Tony Blair is a socialist, as is the current Prime Minsiter, Gordon Brown), as is Spain.
France has also elected socialists in the past, and true to democracy, when the people have decided that they did not want a socialist in power, they elected them out of office.

Liberal democracy is an ideal -- but it doesn't exist in reality.
Liberal democracy would be where everyone agrees to get together and make decisions, while accepting that those decisions cannot restrict personal liberties more than absolutely necessary for safety.
That doesn't happen. Most democracies (pure or representative) go socialist, where the govt tries to "take care" of people to keep the people happy and compliant.
A true liberal democracy based on freedom and respect for diversity would be nice. But the human race isn't there yet.

The idea is not. It is the political party's within the system that are a sham. In the UK we have 3 main political party's who have a strangle hold over the electoral system making it almost impossible, for an independent MP to get elected to Parliament. They have manage to seperate the electorate into small pressure groups each with their own gripe instead of looking the Society's need as a whole. Plus the PC brigades ist. and ism's if you diagree with their thoughts instead of argueing their opinion.

The modern ideology known as 'liberalism' is in fact everything but. Yes it is a sham.
Classical liberalism is based on liberty. Classical liberals do not employ the power of government to override the fairness of the free market.
Modern 'liberals' support undue regulation (excessive mileage standards), censorship (Campaign Finance Reform, Fairness Doctrine) and unfair redistribution of wealth (class-war based taxation).
Yes. It is a sham. It has nothing whatsoever to do with liberty; the original basis of liberalism.

Politicians get elected by telling people they'll make them rich and happy and destroy their enemies. If they do, it's not liberal, if they don't it's not a democracy.

Yes because now more and more "liberal politicians" are more like communist politicians. They support censorship of those who oppose and they plan on demolishing the social class of the poor. Sounds like the U.S.S.R. to me.
