Why the dislike towards it, what are the problems? Is the problem that you don't wish to live in a socialist country or the politics itself? I feel the best way to get this answered is to place the question elsewhere so:

Is France correct to be a socialist country or not?

I don't understand the other americans on here. I don't think they've actually spent time in another country. All Americans on here keep saying our country was built on freedom, and seem to think socialism will somehow deny us our "freedoms". Well let me ask you, what freedoms do we have in america that countries like Great Britain and France don't have?? Citizens in those countries choose their own religion, profession, doctors, schools, etc. Those citizens vote in their politicians, have mega malls, and live lives similar to our own.

In fact, you might say they have more freedoms than we do! Women get 6 months paid maternity leave in Great Britain. I don't know about you ladies, but I'd gladly take 6 months to bond with my child rather than the pitiful 6 weeks I'm going to get here in the US. If you become critically ill or get into a car accident your healthcare will be totally free in most western european countries. In america, you will have to worry how much debt this will put you in. You'll be looking at a long fight with your insurance company over what benefits they will actually pay for.

In Europe citizens get 3 weeks paid vacation minimum, some countries allow for even more. This is your right when you start your job, you don't have to work for the company for at least a year to get this benefit. Most american companies require you to work for them for a certain period of time, and you'll be lucky to get more than 2 weeks vacation over here unless you've worked for a company at least 5 years.

Everytime I visit England I stock up on my allergy medicine Zyrtec. Why? Well in good old america my insurance company charges me $75/month to get my Zyrtec. In England I can buy a month supply of Zyrtec for $15. Prescriptions in England are not priced by generic & premium brands. Everyone is charged the same amount for each prescription, which is roughly $12. If you're pregnant, under 16, elderly, or unemployed, your prescriptions are FREE! Must be nice to know that if your child is critically ill in England that all their medication is free. Unlike in America, you won't have to worry about going bankrupt in order to pay for your family's medications.

Whomever said that scadinavian health care is poor compared to America is obviously uninformed. Norway and Sweden are consistently ranked as the top healthcare systems in the world by the world health organization! They provide free care to their citizens and have some of the best technology in the world! Their citizens live longer than Americans, as do most Europeans and our neighbors to the North.

Physicians aren't paid as much in Europe, but they still make decent money. A family doctor in Britain will make the equivalent of $100K each year. In fact, their incentive to earn more money is to make patients well. A doctor there will receive a bonus for getting a patient to stop smoking, or if a patient goes for a mental health screening. Surely the motivation for physicians should not be how much money they will make, but how well they treat their patient's overall health. I had a doctor charge me $180 for a phone call here in America. He took 2 minutes to decide I had a sinus infection and said I should try amoxicillin and saline nasal spray. $180 for 2 minutes of time!!! I'm sorry but physicians are not worth the money they are paid for in America. I should know, I work with them everyday.

Wake up everybody. Travel outside of the US, ask questions, and learn about other western countries. I think you'll find America is lacking in many aspects. Sure the more socialist countries have their problems, but the benefits their citizens receive are worth the extra taxes in my opinion. They think of things as "we" instead of the "me" American culture. But I guess most of you are happy putting more money into the millionares' pockets so they can buy an extra yacht.

Well I've just joined about 3 days ago and I love it! I've been spending a lot of time here but a lot of the questions I encounter make me want to go research topics further. So I would say I do read more. Not only that, they have made me rethink issues that I've had, and I must say they do make me feel better. I've always liked to read either way, but as I discover new things here, I feel motivated to go out and research it further or go pick up a new book I haven't heard about before. I'd say this place is pretty useful.

Well, you could start by comparing the productivity of the two countries to answer the question regarding France.
Additionally, people living in America would naturally not be in favor of socialistic ideas as our constitution prevents it. Also this country was founded on the right to freedom.
History has proven countless times that socialism is not productive, so why would we want that?

It's not just Americans who don't like socialism, why would you think that? I'll bet if you asked any person in any Eastern European country how they felt about socialism, they would tell you how much they cherish freedom, democracy, and capitalism. OK, so it's not easy, who ever said life was easy? Socialism is an unachievable ideal. Why should the hard working be punished, and the lazy rewarded? I know that's a simplistic analogy, but it pretty much sums it up. And as far as politics, oh yeah, it's not perfect here in America, but, with socialism and communism, the party runs everything.

We have been taught since we were little that our country is the best and we were also taught not to question it. I think that WWII was the beginning of this attitude. Also, the public is constantly being brainwashed and lied to through mainstream media. They do this by feeding us the same information (its all well thought out and planned) over and over again on different channels. We are made to believe that we have a choice. Americans have the attitude that we can do anything to anyone, which is of course very false. Nationalism is a dangerous thing

because America IS NOT a Socialist Country !

if that's what the French want, then good for them.

As a liberal I'm sick and tired of people trying to play the socialist card.
It's Not part of the American way, and that's that !

True sociliasm will not work, because there will always be people around trying to take advantage of any system. That is why mixed systems function the best, and provide a more stable, secure society.

Socialism has a bit of a negative connotation, but Americans have actually embraced socialist programs quite enthusiastically. Social Security, for instance, is the "third rail of American politics" - you can't touch it - and it's about as socialist as you can get.

France was the birthplace of democracy, for them it did not work.America was established as a democratic nation after the revolution, for us it does work. With the problems we have, socialism does,to some, seem to be the answer. However, those who fail to recognize that while imperfect, our system of government does actually work have for the most part, only lived in our democracy..Given a choice(as our government allows) i would always prefer democracy to any other current form of government.

France is trying to get out from under socialism. They've dug a nice hole for themselves and will have a tough time to get back on their feet, if ever.

Between Socialism, a lazy society, an overwhelming amount of immigrants and PC, they'll have a tough go of it. :)

NO, Socialism is NOT good.
