I want to go to the beach with a fake shark fin that looks as realistic as possible and scare people. I'm thinking Styrofoam thats cut out and done with marker with polyurethane, but I'm not sure. can someone tell me a better way that doesnt cost that much money and, if you can't, tell me if this will work and how I can fix it? Thanks.

Buy styrofoam insulation from the hardware store. It comes in flat sheets, not too big. You can carve it with a knife. But don't paint it because the paint will pollute the water. Instead, pretend to be an albino shark or make a fabric covering for it out of gray material.

I think it will work, you'll probably get kicked off the beach for the rest of the summer.

Disclaimer. I assume no responsibility for what might happen if you do this.

Here's what I would do. Get a two liter drink bottle and put weight along the side of it. Attach your fin to the bottle opposite the weight. I wouldn't use Styrofoam it will break, plywood or a thick black rubber would be better. Wire ties through holes in the bottom of the fin and around the bottle would be pretty secure. Test it the tub to make sure it's standing straight up. Remember you may have wind to deal with so more weight is better. A swimming shark is more menacing so let's make him swim. Get some line, black if you can find it, and attach it to the nose of the bottle. You can pull that around or better yet attach two lines one person can pull it one way and then it can turn around and go the other way. Good luck.

well first of all i think you can get into trouble by doing this but if you are willing to take a chance more power to you.
What you have is good just don't forget you can make it look like its been cut up. If you want to scare people i would go out were its really deep and then start coming in, you could have the fin above water then slowly go under then once you get closer come back up so people can see it. you could even circle people and lightly brush against them if your really skilled.
hope this helps and good luck!

What a dork....I love the idea!!! Even dolphin fins would scare me when I would be boogie boarding in Santa Cruz.

If it's going to be in the ocean you will need to put weight def. on the bottom. Good luck...i would want to see pics of the finished product.

You could always try using a piece of wood covered with a piece of an old tire inner tube, that would look realistic from a distance.
