early childhood development or society?
Childhood - easy. Most children learn the basics of their personallity and their knowledge of normal, and right or wrong within their first 5 yrs. Hence anything they learn from their family enviroment in that time frame, they will carry with them for the rest of their lives.

Looking at Bowlby would also be a good place to start. He had a theory of attachment. He also had a maternal deprivation hypothesis. This looked at the effect on the development of the child if contact with the primary care giver was limited or taken away for a period of time.
Look at some of the research done by Aimsworth into attachment types. From this a whole cultural differences thing arises as the attachment types she came up with occured at varying levels across cultures. This could lead to a discussion on how different cultures raise children differently, forming different relationships yet all seem to develop 'normally'.
These are only some basic ideas I can remember. Hope it's given you some ideas.

You need to get your head around the plain physiological development of the child. Basically the infants brain is still developing for the first year, it can't develop inside the womb, because the head would get too big for the pelvis.
The stimulation of interaction between mother and infant, pros and cons of breastfeeding - other stimulation e.g. voice sound, pictures tactile - hands and lips
Diet and feeding and interaction at feeding times, brain development or lack of it with regards to minerals, nutrition, and substance abuse by parents e.g alcohol, tobacco, and other social drugs, from six months preconception to six months after birth.
Family interactions Wife husband relationships sibling relationships
You need to know some guru's like Bowlby and Piaget and if I recall Anna Freud (Sigmund's granddaughter I think)
Bowlby is good on attachment. Piaget on cognitive development
Then learning to walk and talk and establishing position within family hierarchy
Use your own observations as well. Test the gurus against the experience of members of your family.
You should find the exercise invaluable and you are obviously meant to go into it in some depth, so spend some time reading, researching and working out how you are going to approach it. Then plan it out and write it

i can give you an essay i just wrote on attachment theory if you want it. 1500 words, as attachment is the major socialisation theory of the child up to about 2 you should be able to scrounge something out of it.
Alternatively read Bowlby and Klein for your self , should cover a good portion of 2000 words, especially if you stick the freudian stuff in.

human attachment drives us; disruptions in attachments early in life contribute to an ingrained lack of trusting others and unstable relationships that may be severe as in Borderline P. Disorder or less severe...
The most important relationship is when you are younger than three years, when a child has to gain object constancy, a very important developmental triumph. If this is not accomplished, the child will progress into an adult with severe abandonment fears that manifest in an instinctive inability to trust others and an inability to be alone due to lack of a stable identity.

it can effect the views and actions of the child when they grow older. parents having a strong relationship with their child from early on helps to ensure that the child will be more open with their parents. parents can also more easily discuss life issues with their child.

They are extremely important. When you are little, your family is your entire life and world. How you rank there means a lot.
