Most of those sold into slavery with western nations had been captured by other tribes in wars within Africa. The difference between slavery in America and slavery in Africa is that the latter involved blacks enslaving blacks. That even continued in Liberia where freed slaves from North America, known as Amero-Liberians, enslaved the native people of that land. The demand for slaves in the West Indies and North America was to satisfy labor demands for various crops, including sugar, coffee and cotton.

Not my particular field of expertise but-
Someone may be forced into slavery in Africa, due to being captured in tribal warfare, and then sold on to a third party.

The increase in slavery in the 16th century may be down to the increased need for cash crops in America (Cotton, Tobacco)

Not sure about the second question, may be that there was effectively "no return" from the Americas, whereas in Africa, there was a possibility (abeit slim) you could escape and get home.

The system of slavery was Africa was the same as in the rest of the Muslim world at that time. It was not limited to any particular race. Most slaves were captured on the battlefield or bought in the open market.

The biggest difference was that in Africa, a slave could buy his/her freedom, marry a free man or woman, own property, and live as member of the household (they ate on the same table as the slave owner and wore same types of clothes). The children of slaves were always born free. If physically abused, a slave was generally granted freedom by a judge. And it was considered very meritorious and for expiation of sins to free a slave. That rarely happened in America.

The demand for slavery increased when white colonists finally succeeded in grabbing the entire American continent from the Indians and needed workers to work on farms. Age of industrialization had also begun and labor was in short supply. Slavery was the cheapest way.
