It depends what she is like. If she has kids make arrangements to spend a weekend alone somewhere. Get her a massage, facial, something to pamper herself.
If she isn't that kind of woman, think about what she is interested in. Just don't get her an appliance or a membership to a gym...no matter if she likes those things or not.
If money is tight....try a picinic for two at a local park. Write her a letter or a poem...pick her fresh flowers if possible. If you write her a love letter no matter what kind of woman she is she will adore your effort and she will remember it forever.

It depends on the woman. Every woman experiences turning 40 differently. Who can know what the lady likes? Ask her to give you 3 choices of what she wants. If she's like most females, she'll appreciate being able to do this. Play it safe and pick from her 3 choices. Throw a sentimental card in the bag and she'll be thrilled!
