Yes, in India and China as well as a couple other countries, sons are worth more than daughters. In modern countries, such as the USA and England, due to the creation of sperm banks, daughters are worth more than sons.

Sons and daughters are equally important, though in different ways. Now-a-days, in India, a majority of people fanatically give more importance to sons than daughters. This is bad.

The discrimination in favour of the son is very much prevalent. The equality of genders is only lip sympathy. The households where the sons and daughters are treated equally do exist but such households are blessed.

well we cant generalise when we r talkin india in total...coz its a huge country and probably the most diverse there ever can be
In north ...sons r more favoured though. as its a patriarchial society...In south its a matriarchial society....daughters r more powerful as in rights n properties
But the trend is changing these days as woman r gainin power and employment more steadily than men...and u see india is being ruled by woman with sonia gandhi and the president patil
in urban india...the mindset of the people are changin as against the old traditional mindset of havin more sons than daughters...now both r treated equally ...though exceptions r and will always exist in every sense of the word

The gender ratio in India is expected to become a huge problem in the next few decades because couples want to have sons instead of daughters and are now using technology--and abortion--to better ensure birth of a male child than a female child. Children who are put up for adoption in China are invariably female.
This answers your questions, I think.

Yes the son is more valuable in China and India. In China you can only have one child and in rural communities you are allowed to have another child if your first was a girl. Most girls are thrown in orphanages as soon as they are born because girls are considered a waste of space and a burden on the family. In China they do forced abortions on the women if it's a girl, forced sterilization if they have a boy. In India it's common for arranged marriages, 80% of abortions are done by women who find out they are having a girl, in rural communities the girls 1-5 years old are starved to death so that the sons can live, the wife if her husband dies has to throw herself on the burning pier and die as well, her family has to pay a dowry to the husband's family and if they don't she can be thrown onto the street without a penny and her family won't take her back because she brough shame on her family.

Old perceptions take time to die. Even though modern Indian parents try to provide equal treatment to their sons and daughters, some difference exists and are treated as normal. Of course there are exceptions. But with education and consciousness, I'm sure things will improve.

Had sons and daughters been treated equally today, there wouldn't have been such a huge deficit in the gender ratio! look at this whole 'Beti Bachao Andolan' and all!!
I think only 1% Indians treat their children irrespective of their gender.
