You must spend your money for the best brand.
As I know HP and Dell are the best in laptops for a long time and they are very reliable too. I trusted HP and I bought a HP laptop 2 years before, and still like the day I bought it. Didn't even have to service it at least once up to now.
I recommend you to buy a HP (with experience) or Dell laptop.
On www.hp.com you can even customize your laptop. And also you can check the price.

You have to make sure you look at the market and compare all the prices for the comp you are interested in.
Prices will vary and some places may have specials that you can send in mail in rebates and have a chance to save literally hundreds of dollars.
some tips on a good comp for you:
dual processor is good that runs at least 3.0 mghz.
1gb memory at least.
200 gb harddrive at least.
with usb ports being more used and useful make sure it has at least two usb ports.. you can always buy a connection that you can add two or more off of just one port.
Try to find a deal that comes with an operating system like windows vista.
having a cd/dvd burner is very convenient now adays also but you can always buy and external one later.
when you go into buy it you should already know which one you want because by then you should of checked the market for the cheapest laptop that has all the things listed above.
when you go in just say the name of the laptop you saw in the store add. if you saw it online make sure you call the store before you go and see if they carry that specific laptop in store. sometimes the adds online are just for online orders and not stocked in store.
good luck!!

Unless you are going to upgrade to a better motherboard and CPU, then I would just go with the new one. The reason for this would be that there could very well be other issues that would cost more money to repair, or there could be other issues come up soon after the repair. Better to buy the new one and have the warranty. However you could make this an opportunity to upgrade your laptop to a much better and faster machine. You could make it exactly how you would like it. But either way, you will have to spend some money on this problem you have. Good luck to you.

Don't worry about embarassing yourself. If you feel a store or clerk is giving you attitude, find another store. Ask questions, and lots of them. If the clerks can't or won't answer them, find another store.
Do a lot of research. Ask yourself what it is you want the computer to do. Ask yourself how much you want to spend. If you are considering buying a Mac, think about a used one (excellent value there).
If you must go with Microsoft ask yourself "Is all the extra money spent for ram and speed needed to run Vista worth it, or should I just stick with XP?"
To find a good value factor in hard drive size, ram, screen size, operating system and mhz speed.
If you haven't already made your mind up think about a dual core Mac. Just think about it. Best of both worlds.

Well I knew exactly what I wanted on sale from Best Buy. At first he said they were out, than I asked him to check other stores and he finally found it in back. Tried to sell me a ton of extras. Not a great experience but I got what I wanted.

If you buy one at Walmart, you are kind of on your own, because they don't have people around to answer computer questions.
Since this is your first time you should go to Bestbuy or compusa, somewhere where they have qualified people to help.

Research on the computer. Specs of what type of computer you want, what ram means, what processor speed means. The better you research, the less you'll look like a fool. The added benifit of researching is the knowledge you acquire, lasts forever.
