Check in your local paper and listen to the radio--there are many jobs that revolve around quality control or telemarketing where you report to a business once or twice a month.
Also some tech-centered jobs (emailing for customer service) may allow you to work at home after work X months at that office. My husbands works for a major weight loss center as a supervisor in the .com portion of the company, and they let employees who have worked there at least 6 months work from home.
Just know that working from home isn't always as easy as it sounds. You still have to put in the hours, even if your child is sick.
Anyway, when checking with a company to see if they are legit ask how they handle your income tax returns. If they provide you a stub, it's legit. If not, they are a scam.

I have personally been doing a bit of research on work from home companies for about 4 1/2 months now and i"ve run into quite a few good companies that you can do in your spare time and earn a stable income.People who work for these companies generally are college students, stay at home moms, retired persons, people looking for a second or third income. I have been scammed by a few companies as well I have all information posted on my blog for people looking to work from home I also have a list of companies to watch for. Most people think that if they charge a fee then its a scam but my research has proven to differ. Believe it or not most of the scams that I've been through were free to join you can view more info here

Here are my suggestions on finding a legitimate opportunity that's right for YOU:
- Set your financial goals -- Are you just looking for extra income or a potential full-time income? How long (and hard) are you willing to work to meet your goal?
- Determine if you are looking for a JOB or a BUSINESS -- there is a distinct difference between the two and you want to focus your energies appropriately for the best results.
- If looking for a JOB, what are your marketable skills and previous experiences? If you are looking for a BUSINESS, go with your passions, things that interest and motivate you the most. Build a list and use that to begin your search. General rule of thumb: Never pay for a job (businesses, on the other hand, usually involve some expenses).
- Review your budget -- know ahead of time what you are willing and able to invest into your business, including start-up costs and ongoing maintenance and promotion.
- Find a rep to contact, check out their websites, ask questions, do your own independent research.
- I personally also check out a company's status and consumer feedback on www.bbb.org and www.ripoffreport.com
Hope this info helps, best wishes on your search...

Have you tried writing articles? There are many places online that will pay you for articles. In my opinion the best place to start is at Associated Content. You can write about any subject that interests you then submit it for payment. They typically respond to you within 7 to 10 days with an offer for payment, usually somewhere between $3 to $20 per article. I average around $7 or $8 an article. You will also recieve a residual income based on the amount of times your article is read.
For other places to submit articles for pay to, as well as other ways to make money online check my blog: http://debtslayers.blogspot.com
