The upper peninsula of Michigan has some very rough terrain, gravel roads, and a lot of snow/ice in the winter. What is the best car/truck to have in conditions like these? Anyone from UP, Alaska, cold climates please give advice-we think we might have to trade in our Ford Focus sedan before winter sets in!

Yes, we have kids and things to haul. We have been thinking about a Dodge pick-up that uses diesel because a friend from Alaska has one he's pleased with. Consumers Reports give these a poor rating, though. Our best car was a Jeep Grand Cherokee Larado, until the engine blew and the transmission went out-we found out that these were typical problems for the model and year.

Either one truck or SUV will be fine as long as you have working 4X4 and good winter tires.

I live 90 miles from the Mackinaw Bridge near Gaylord so I know what your in for.

It is not out of the normal for you to get 12" plus overnight

I own a 1987 Dodge Dakota long bed. I like my truck a lot. Everything is manual on it, old crank windows, no bells no whistles. Old school. Very modest and reliable. Best part is it is there's no payment. It only cost me $500 and a new set of tires. The only downside is the gas mileage. I used to drive a civic, so the gas bill went way up when I bought the truck...but it's worth it! Another vehicle...I don't know what I would get. I'll wait until I marry and have kids insha'Allah.

If you want to drive over the terrain, you should consider a jeep. They all have 4 wheel drive on the models, and some have great prices!! You should consider the Jeep Liberty, it costs under 30,000 and it is GREAT over off road conditions, don't get a sedan, they wont get around that type of terrain easily!! =)

a pickup is really not good in snow unless you put a lot of weight in the back, suv's are ok, a front wheel drive car is great in the snow, I would leave it be unless you want more monthly payments and a whole lot of poor gas mileage
