As Ewan McGregor and his pal Charley Boorman celebrated the end of their epic 15,000-mile motorbike journey from Scotland to South Africa, the Star Wars actor made a statement that would have surely had his wife Eve Mavrakis in despair had it been fulfilled. "I'd quite like to turn around and just carry on back again," he grinned.
The two motorcycle maniacs have been away from home for three months, travelling in sometimes searing heat as they passed through 20 countries.
BOTH THESE GUYS ARE MARRIED WITH YOUNG CHILDREN - IS IT OK TO B*GGER OFF FOR THREE MONTHS JUST TO FULFILL YOUR OWN NEEDS WHEN YOU HAVE KIDS THIS YOUNG?

These motorcycle journeys are definitely approved-of by their wives. If you don't believe it, go rent "Long Way Round" and see what the wives have to say in the interviews. Don't look for trouble in other peoples' marriages, stick with your own relationships.
Ewan and Charley have striven more than most actors to bring their wives and children along when filming on location. They speak of that in "Long Way Round." Ewan has also made it a priority for the past few years to film in England where he can just commute to the set from home - 2 of the 3 movies he filmed in the past year were filmed in London, and he only reluctantly left the family in London while he filmed in NYC - because his eldest daughter was facing the big school exams.
"Long Way Down" isn't just a vacation - it's a charity money-making TV, DVD and book project that will produce a lot of money for UNICEF, CHAS, and Riders for Health for children in Africa.
And this time, Ewan's wife Eve met them in Malawi and biked along with them for 10 days, her first time riding a motorcycle for any distance. As with "Long Way Round" they communicated daily to home via satellite phone.
Following this, Ewan is vacationing WITH his family in Africa, then he returns to England where he will do "Othello" on the London stage and thus have lots of time at home with the family.
And, frankly, if Ewan were my husband, I'd let him experience life rather than feel tied-down. Make anybody feel trapped in a marriage and never able to live their dream - that's a recipe for divorce. I've been married 21 years myself, living that attitude, just not to Ewan :)

I think its ok to let your partner have his/her own interests and do their own thing but I think that 3 months is pushing it a bit. If the wives of these two are supportive then its not for us to judge. They must feel its ok or there would have been hell to pay (perhaps thats why he wanted to turn around and go back again!). Young children are very good at coping without one parent at a time. Evidence proves this in the children of our Armed Forces.

No one can understand someone elses relationship. She might be happy to have him away for so long.
Ewan is an actor and they often are away on location for months at a time. This is not much different.
I could never be away from my family for so long, but men are different.

I'm sure that there was a financial consideration in this from which wife and children will benefit. few wives like their husbands away from home but learn to live with it because of the benefits. it's the ear ache he is going to get from his wife that is enough to make him want to go round in the opposite direction. remember his wife was likely to be in in the planning at some stage, even if it was only to ensure at least one set of extra clothes

It's not fair for their wives to have to stay home and be the responsible ones while these guys are out playing, but who knows, maybe the wives are busy with their own lives and are happy to have the men out of their hair? I guess if they are unhappy, it's up to them to fix it. They will never get that time back with their children though.

I am not familiar with motorcycle ride of these two individuals, but I would think that some time during their journey, their families joined them for a day or two. They should really reconsider extending their adventure in consideration of their families.

True... but then its that kind of spirit that probably attracted their wives in the first place. And I daresay Mrs McGregor did not have to struggle on her own, what with all that hired help.

We all need time to ourselves if we have children but I thought it was more in the 'weekend away' bracket rather than 3 flippin months! I wouldnt want to be away from mine for so long anyway

You are judgemental and have way too much free time. You don't know if they are communicating with their children and speaking everyday on the phone or whatever.
Your relationship with your family is not their relationship with their family.

It's just publicity work. They probably got to see their families during this time. We never really know what actually goes on.
