I don't have it on the '2' key, that has " on it, but if I press shift and 2 then it gives me '@' . If I press the @ key I get " instead!

Every keyboard on an HP sold in US and UK has it above the 2 key. Hold down shift and then press 2 to get the @ sign.

Depends where the @ symbol is located on your keyboard, if it is located on the 2 key, then hold the shift button (arrow symbol) down and press the 2 key. If it is located somewhere near the bottom right hand corner ( near the return/enter key ) then do just the same - hold the shift key (arrow) down whilst pressing the key with the symbol on.
Have to disagree with rich z - HP laptops sold in the UK for the UK market do not have the @ symbol on the 2 key.

Try the arrow key under caps lock and while you press this down hold it and press the number 2key you will get it that way if you do then get somebody to change the regional settings as they are wrong for the system.

YOu could be on thr US layout.

Try using the " symbol by Shift 2. If that works, you need to go to the COntrol Panel, Keyboard and make sure you have it setup for UK layout as they're different.

it is possible that the @ sign is not in the normal place. Is the keyboard a US/UK keyboard?

If the @ sign is on the bottom right hand part of the key, you will have to use the [Alt Gr] button and then the relevant key (for example: [Alt Gr] + Q)

Assuming you are in the UK and your layout is set to US you need to go to Start>control panal>regional and language.

Under the regionals tab it should be set to English (united kingdom)

On the lanuages tab select "details". here you can set your keyboard layout to suit UK.
