I don't think we are safer, but I think we are confronting the forces that would eventually destroy us, instead of complacently allowing it to happen.

Hmm. I think you would have to define 'were' to properly answer the question.

I remember having to learn how to hide under my desk or run to an air raid shelter when I was in grammar school. At the time there was no doubt that there was going to be a nuclear holocaust and the weapon of choice was for more of the Americans to survive than Russians. In that respect, yes I feel we are safer.
I remember when child abuse and wife beating was a matter of family privacy and no one was prosecuted for it. Yeah we're safer now.
I remember when there was no such thing as a catalytic converter and you could cut the air with a knife, Yeah safer now.
I remember when no one had ever heard of chemo therapy nor an MRI, yep, safer now.
I remember when national guard troops mowed down college students at Kent State University, safer now.
I remember when blacks registering to vote were sent flying down the street with attack dogs and a fire hose. Now a black man is running and contending for the highest office in the land. yep, safer now.
I remember when planes were being Hijacked to Cuba on a monthly basis. Yep safer now.
I remeber John Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, John Lennon were assasinated....and Ford, Regan and the pope were shot. Safer now.
I remember when ABS brakes were science fiction and seat belts were an oddity. Safer now.
I remember when most rockets going into outer space were nuclear weapons tests, now they bring multinational teams of scientists to an apartment up there. Safer now, yes.
I remember the draft and 58 thousand body bags. Safer now.
I remember the soviet union. Whoa.
I remember the chicago seven, safer.
I remember the KuKluxKlan, safer now.
I remember the black panthers, safer now.
I remember David Dinkins, much safer now.
I remember the Berlin Wall, Germans might agree, safer now.
Yes, I remember 9-11 and 7-7

Shall I go on?

No, not really. Until 9/11, I did feel safe. After 9/11 I felt very unsafe and that feeling hasn't changed. Don't get me wrong, I don't spend my life living in sheer paranoia, I can't help but question why nothing is being done with our borders. Heck, if I was a terrorist, I'd enter through Mexico.

I think we are the same. I think its actually hard for terrorists to come up with something better than 9/11. Nothing will generate the fear as well as that day did. A dirty bomb or anthrax might do the job.

No I don't think we are. But how would we know. We get so many fake warnings. If they would just have the fortitude to tell us some type of truth. I think we are strong enough as a people to be able to cope with reality. The other possibility is it's all BS used to manipulate the population. Now if this is what it is I think we need to collectively kick Bush and Cheney in the ***. Either way I am not feeding into fear.

I doubt I am any more or less "safe" than before. All of the extra security implemented is only an illusion to make the public "feel" safe rather than to effectively prevent terrorist acts or any other crime from occurring.

That is a question that no one can answer. Certainly we have more security but is it working? And, some argue that we are less safe because the war against terrorism has increased the ranks of terorrists. But, the flip side is that no one knows how much terrorist networks would grow if there were no war on terrorists. They may have been emboldened and their ranks may have grown even larger than they are today.

more safe. if nothing else the awareness in the intel community. they have successfully stopped several plots; ie fort dix, buffalo, heathrow, chicago, miami. there is a better awareness of the actual threats. the intel is better than ever, though not as good as it can be, coming to us from our own people. one of the main problems was that the US did not have enough people in the middle east. i would say that has been addressed.

I feel safer because we are all more alert to what these savages are capable of doing, slowly but surely people are waking up.

I feel as safe as I did before 9/11.

And I wasn't watching the twin towers come down on television. I lived (and still live) in NYC and saw it live.
