I notice I feel a whole lot better and less stressed out when I don't watch the news on TV and I don't read the paper.
Anyone have any thoughts about the media.

Are they trying to persuade us to think a certain way? Are they trying to scare people into letting the government take our rights away?

I might add, I question just about everything I hear on the news? I believe there is alot of propaganda in the media, if they are telling it, then I question why? What do they have to gain, because it's almost certainly not to make my life better.

Yes, exactly, it is a type of mind control. There are about 5 corporations in the entire world that own/control almost all of the media worldwide. They no longer report the news; like in the James Bond movie, they MAKE the news.
"we don't need your education...
"we don't need your thought control..."
and, hey, that is more true now than when this song was released.
There are special terms to describe how people feel when bombarded by the media. Read "1984" and you will realize the similarities, especially now that Red China is rearing its dragonhead.
Propaganda, thought control, mind control, brainwashing...take your pick. They are all the same thing. An effort to get the people to believe what "they" want.

No, the media sends out whatever they think everyone wants to hear. If people aren't interested they won't tune in or read the news. That's why so much drama is created. Unfortunately i think the media way overdoes it and focuses on the wrong things, like celebrities, body image, fitness and sex. We need to learn about society issues and science - you know, the things that really matter.

I prefer searching the news on yahoo now because I can click on the links that are interet. The news is always claiming that some food or another is unhealthy, saying obesity will make you get cancer, and stuff like that. And there are always gruesome child abuse stories and whatnot. The news is very negative all the time. I wish they would focus on something more positive.

Another quite disturbing thing I noticed is that the news people do not seem to have any emotion. Even the tone of their voices sound the same!

If you feel better by not watching the news then don't watch it. Just make sure you somehow keep in touch with the outside world though!

Human nature being the way it is, people pay attention to bad news much more so than good news. The news media even when reporting real events tends to exaggerate and blow things out of proportion. In this way they are making bad news sound worse than it really is. It pushes up readership and viewership.

The low quality media outlets are especially given to exaggeration. You might want to try reading or viewing the higher quality media outlets and stay away from the tabloid press.

Remember the PBS news hour is considered boring by many people --- but they don't use the hype factor as much as the lesser quality media. Unfortunately in today's press they figure that the worse the news sounds the better.

Also today the line between news and entertainment often gets blurred. When you watch or read the news, ask yourself the question -- am I learning anything here -- are they trying to inflame me?

Try and get news that makes you ask questions and feeds your intellect, not news that inflames or tries to feed your emotions.

Yes, the media constantly bombards us with twisted reality and pessimistic outlooks of life. occasionally they will throw in some feel good stories to keep things interesting. but viewers will only watch the news if there are interesting stories. so the media is very selective about the stories they choose to publish. I guess they figure that bad news is more interesting than good news.
