My newlywed wife and I are closing on a new single-family home in the next month and want to make a list of things that we should think to buy (ranging from garden hoses to snow shovels and more).

Bed, washing machine, cooker, microwave, fridge freezer, sofa, table. These are the essentials in my opinion.

Whatever you decide you need be careful with your spending. When I bought my first home I bled my checking account dry buying all the things I thought were essential.

Its summer clearance time at most stores now so you can save some money buying mowers, lawn furniture and things like that.

Think of things you'll need to do to know what you'll need to get.
Cooking: Pots and pans, utensils, pot holders, oven mitts.
Cleaning: Detergent, sponges or dishrags, paper towels, etc. mop, broom
Household repairs: small toolbox, tack hammer, box of nails/screws, pliers, wrenches, etc.
Laundry: Detergent, fabric softener, baskets or shelves.
Yard work: shovel, snow shovel, rake, trowel, buckets, garden cart, garden hose, sprinklers, etc.
Bathroom: Shampoo, etc. Shelves or caddy for shower/tub. Accessories for bathroom like shower curtain, rug, soap dish, etc.
Bedroom: Furniture (of course), linens, lamps, shoe rack, jewelry box, etc.
Living Room: Furniture, lamps, end tables, coffee table, bookcase or movie rack for DVD's, etc.
Misc: curtains, blinds, coat rack, key rack, shoe mat, welcome mat, door wreath, etc.

Hope this helps a little. You know better than I do what sort of things you'll need, but maybe this will help you think in an organized way about what type of things you will need to get.

Good luck and congrats!!

Gee, I hope you already purchased the most essential...a home inspection. Without a professional home inspection, you might not have enough cash left after repairs to even buy a snowshovel.
