Politicians do just enough for their constituents so that they can get re-elected -- the rest goes to the special interests that give them so many nice gifts from lobbyists.

The biggest part of the problem is that the people who need the help most are usually those with the lowest voter turnout or are unable to vote due to being underage or a convicted felon. Most drug convictions also take away the ability to vote which excludes a huge amount of people who are already unlikely to vote.
The money goes to the Congressmen who have the most power and therefore are backed by those with the most money and influence and they mostly want lower taxes and less interferance from the Federal Government.
Until enough people get mad about the way things are and start voting and encouraging others to vote, things will stay the same.

Take a look at the federal budget sometime.
Over 1/2 (almost $1.5 trillion) of the $2.7 trillion budget was spend on unconstitutional socialist programs. And another $200 billion was spent on programs and agencies of dubious Constitutional merit. That's over 60% of the budget.
How is that considered "refusing" to help our own country?

As a Brit who lives in the USA and loves the USA I can never understand why more money is'nt spent on health and education. It seems strange to me that people have to beg for school supplies. School supplies should be paid for from Tax. It makes me sad that the richest country in the world cant ensure that all children get free childhood vacinations and that the elderly and Vets dont get more help.

Because it is too busy sending money as foreign "aid" when in reality the money is sent so the rest of the world views us as a superpower. If we stopped giving money to other countries, then who would be our allies? Everyone can't stand us already, they just use us as a way to support their cause!

It is strange, for instance Bush came out and said that we should not spend money domestically, and we should spend the budget on the military and the war on terror. I think we should pull back from the world and start using bio-fuels and electric cars and spend all the money here at home, after all it is our tax money.

the money is apparently much better spent on securing allies abroad, by arming them and offshoring jobs.
No matter how much they really hate us, they'll continue to take our money.
