I would be much more concerned with the maintenance. A 1500 hour motor that has been well taken care of is preferable to a 500 hour motor that has been abused. Ask to see maintenance records. Ask to check the lower unit oil for water/metal. Check the oil in the motor itself. Do a compression check ($25 gauge at Sears can save you a bundle!). In general, 900 hours on an inboard outboard is not a lot...

Not really to many for the age . but if this thing uses gas like my 260 Mercruser (350 chevy) did hang on to your wallet, You need lots of cash for gas.
The big thing is the outdrive make sure the seals are good and no water getting into the gear grease

900 hours is nothing. You figure a lot of people are out on the water for 8,10,12 hours a day. That's only 90 - 100 days on the water. I'd do that in one year.

Depends if the rest of the drive train is in good shape. Best to hire a marine mechanic to check it out as it can get very $$$ very quick.
