Some routers, and I say some because most do not do this, will allow you to set them to a wireless bridge mode. In which case you can indeed use them to connect to another system wirelessly.
Basically the wireless radio becomes a client instead of an Access Point. You loose the local wireless connection ability because the radio is in use connecting to the other system but all computers connected to the local ports are connected to the internet through the router.
There are even a few routers that can become "wireless repeaters" and simply repeat the information received from a remote system and you can still wirelessly connect to them.
(Check Buffalo, or dd-wrt software for some linksys and buffalo units http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/index.php )
There are other "off brand", meaning you don't normally find them at your local store, units that have similar software/firmware included in them. Companies like routerboard, zinwell, engenius make these routers.
Please note... if you have the PERMISSION of the system you are connecting into these are legal. Otherwise you are violating most state and certainly Fedral laws and the fines and sentances are becoming rather harsh!

If you have a wirelss card you can access any open wifi signals within your vicinity. Often time a router will generate a signal that is locked by the user, but also creates another signal often 'linksys'. This can occurr when people dont set up their internet right. But if you get another persons signal you will share the bandwith making it a lil slower to surf the net and download.

A router will only send the signal it is attached to.
If you need wireless on your PC, get and PCI adpater intalled, or a USB adapter.
