After installing Windows, did you install the drivers for the motherboard. That's where your sound drivers are. Also, if you are running a video, make sure to download and install the latest drivers for it too.

If what you mean is Windows XP pro then go to Microsoft web site and download the xp driver for your audio. you need to know the name of your audio. To know this go to control panel, Click on system, then click on hardware, click on device manager, you will find a yellow check on your sound vedio and game, select and click scan for hardware change under action drop down menu. It will display the name of your audio card. You can then look for it in Microsoft free download site.

Also, try pulling up the volume control icon in the task bar and check the "Line In" feature to make sure the mute box isn't checked.
