A great question! I think its impossible for children to be as innocent as they used to be.

Exposure to more adult content is everywhere. Even the best attempts to shelter a child are often thwarted by other children in school whose parents are more liberal.

Mass marketing is mostly to blame: billboards, posters, commercials (when I was young it was taboo to mention a woman's menstrual cycle, and now we have viagra commercials!) are all to blame. I think cable is a problem too. Things that are racy are often on when kids are still awake.

Overall, I'd say no. You really have to work at preserving a child's innocence today. Even if you shield your child from too much information of an adult nature, you have to closely watch their associations outside the home too.
I grew up when people had values and the media, advertising and marketing knew it was wrong to prey on children's innocence to make a buck.
I feel so sorry for today's children. The majority are truly deprived of the wonder and joy of innocence lost to them. So sad.

♥ I agree that children are not as innocent as they used to be.... I cant tell you how many teenager mothers under the age of 16 that I know. My younger cousin just turned 16, has had sex with quite a few guys, has had a couple of pregnancy scares, is into drugs [[weed]] etc... I cry everytime she talks to me about something new.

Yes, I do. How could they possibly be kept innocent when they are sternly warned about talking to strangers, the dangers of kidnapping, AIDS, etc. They can't even go trick-or-treating by themselves in their home neighborhood any more, how sad!
I grew up in a simpler time. We had no electronic gizmos but we had fun, very little fear, and almost complete innocence.

they absolutely are less innocent.

the WORLD is less innocent than it was ,say,30 years ago.The children are just following suit.

we are ALL slowly evolving into an all 'too-knowing' and jaded global society.

we need to turn ourselves around and start thinking in a different way soon, or whoa! we are going to be living in a H*ll that we have noone to blame for, but ourselves.

Absolutely.....

Imo, kids today are far more out of control than when I was a kid. There's countless things kids of today do, that in my day, I would never even give it a thought let alone act upon it.

It's truly scary to think about their kids generation and what it'll be like, based on what we see today.

Yeah, I once had a hateful online professor. I was complaining and saying I wish I had a picture of him to throw darts at and my daughter heard me. She suggested I google the guy. She's 11. I was shocked! She's a good kid but she knew how I could find my info. For the record, we couldn't find a picture and if we could have we really don't have any darts! :-)

I definitely think so, I think children nowadays are exposed to a lot more violence making them into hardcore predators at younger and younger ages... Before ya know it kids in diapers will be robbing convenient stores!

Yes they are having sexual intercourse at really young ages and are binge drinking at parks late at night and terrorising neighbourhoods with street gangs and lack of respect for their elders. It is also common to be smoking ciggarettes as soon as they hit high school. As well as more and more teens being addicted to smoking marijuana or( pot in their slang).
