Our representatives seem to be for amnesty and a fence for the most part. Most average citizens are for the fence and no amnesty. I'm for enforcing the existing law. If it is enforced, the problem will be much abated. I realize it is expensive, but it will discourage further illegals from coming here and probably cause the ones already here to leave.
Its my understanding the laws are now being enforced. It was announced by the government Friday. Employers have 2 months to verify SS#'s. Those with invalid numbers must be fired or they will face fines. There will also be more raids.

Support border fencing - structural and electronic. Increased border patrol. English only policy for most government interactions exclusions applying to medical, police detainment, things of the most extreme nature - life or death - increased educational opportunity to learn the English language (there are computers in every library - why not install English learning programs). No across the board amnesty - would support a point system for those already here . . . similar to Canada . . . if you read, write and speak English earn a point, if you own a home earn a point, if you have held down a job for three years and paid taxes earn a point, if you have valued skills earn a point. However, the point system should only apply to people who are already in the country. Not new illegals. Immediate deportment for any criminal activity. And finally, we must penalize the businesses that continually abuse Federal legislation. It's the only way to truly alleviate the problem.

It depends on the person --- there is no single view held by all liberals or progressives on the issue.
Some favor amnesty. Some favor enforcement of current laws. Some favor new laws.
Most favor some type of compromise that allows for minmal wasted resources, and a practical approach to solving the problem as it really exists -- and it's just not practical to demand zero-tolerance deportation.

Progressives support amnesty for all immigrants currently in the country, while beefing up borders at the same time.

Edward Kennedy is considered pretty liberal. He wants:
To secure our borders.
Crack down on smugglers and empoyers who break the law
Immediate earned legalization for undocumented workers.
Support family unity
Reduce the backlog and processing time for relatives.
Future immigration based on family ties, refugees and our need for both high and low skilled workers.
Temporary workers will have strong labor protections.
