Sometimes they had a dog to accompany them on their beat. The most famous policeman's dog is Greyfriars Bobby. See this link for his details:

Victorian England isn't- or wasn't- one of my studies. But a good dog is a good partner to have at one's back in case of a fight. I would guess the bobbies knew that.

Who told you they were - as they were not. Policemen, for example, patrolling Central London, would have looked very odd with a dog beside them (even in Victorian England)

Erm....they weren't.

I have a feeling someone has been winding you up.

The standard equipment for a victorian copper included a whistle, a wooden truncheon and a decent pair of boots.

I think bloody great german shepherds would have been a little out of place.

I don't think they were.

Anyway Greyfriars Bobby, who sat by his master's grave in the churchyard was a little terrier. I don't think he has anything to do with police dogs
