There's no doubt that they have saved a lot of lives and been a valuable convenience item to millions. I can't say I like what some people do with them -- talk on the phone in public places so that I can listen to half a very private conversation, talk on the phone while driving and break the law, etc. But it's hard to quarrel with the overall benefits.

It is an almost indispensable item. I think we're far too dependent on them. I have friends that can't go 10 minutes without being on one. Certain skills are being lost as well, such as the ability to search the common phone book for a listing in the yellow pages, and manners are flying out the window. When was the last time someone came to my sales counter not talking on their cell phone at the same time? Can't remember.

That's the thing about technology. Humans will always find a way to abuse it.

I don't have or want a cell phone. According to a story I read this morning in the paper, I'm in the 25% minority of people. I'm going to hold out for as long as I can because I hate the things....

I agree with your ambiguity. They've become so convenient for instant communication around the world, but there also overused to the utmost, bordering on obsession with some folks, young and old. If they could just implant them in people's brains, then the idiots I see on the roadways will have 2 hands to make a dumb move, not just one. LOL
