If you are looking to get off the beaten path, I would travel to Fukushima and see Mount Bandai. (Bandai-san) WE did this many times while were living in Yokohama. For some reason, many western tourists do not about the 5 colored lakes.. they are so stunning and beautiful.
We stayed with a local farmer who also runs an inn. There are many of these in the area. They will offer you the "opportunity" to help pick vegetables in teh field, make mochi in teh mornings and/or take a "dinner cruise".

I copied this from Virtual Tourist so that you would have key words to search: Walk aroung Bandai-san. In UraBandaiKougen(UraBandai Hight) there are beautiful five colored marshes 'Goshikinuma'. Its color is almost all misterious blue, and very clean as you can see bottom.

You can either drive or take the train to Bandai area.

Take the steam locomotive on the Banetsu line from Iwaki to Aizu-Wakamatsu. You need to check to JR schedule to find out when they have SL runs. In the winter it's at it most spectacular, but fall is really good as well.
