No and no one else should.
A tree's bark is like its skin only it never heals. Trees can only build "bandaids" over themselves leaving any bacteria that was able to get in before the wound sealed trapped and festering.
Your seeminly harmless initials provide a point of entry for disease and an attractant for insects like the beech scale. If conditions are right, this opening may kill the tree (see my source).
Don't mean to ruin your fun, but carve your initials in something else! Something not living! Or use a sharpie - they're permanant right?!

Yes, I thought it was so cute at the time...
I think he's still trying to figure out what the initials were, the dope..... He was an idiot...
In regards to TYG- I understand what you are saying! I found that out a little while after I had done the carving. I felt bad, so I planted a new tree. I keep planting trees, honestly, for no reason... im a tree hugger!

Not initails, but yes. My first love and I put our first names on a tree; where we first realized we would love eachother forever. It's in the woods at a summer camp in Maine. We continued to date off and on for a span between 16 and 27 years old. He is long gone now but true love does not fade away, just like the bark on that tree. I still love him dearly, even though he did turn out to an @sshole.

I have never carved into the flesh of a tree so there would be no basis for retaliation.

No, I think you should get a tattoo instead. The tree hates your special someone and will have to deal with the teasing from other trees.

No, because I've had several someone's who were special to me, but I wasn't all that special to them, and I knew it.
