This energy is provided by any number of means. The force required to move the electrons, we call "voltage" and it may be generated using generators (whose driving forces can be nuclear, petrochemical, hydrological, geothermal, ,,, (the list goes on)), batteries (whose driving forces come from the energy stored in chemical bonds), or photovoltaic cells (whose driving force comes directly from sunlight).

Electrons are able to change their energy levels by absorbing or emitting photons. A photon is a particle that is also an energy wave, and they are a key part of quantum physics. The photon is the quantum (i.e., indivisible unit) of electromagmentic energy.
