Try two islands near Rodos:
1) Symi: Gorgeous scenery, fantastic architecture (neoclassic style), good local food at traditional restaurants and entertainment at low profile and cute bars.
2) Nisyros: Gorgeous scenery too, a volcano which makes the landscape unique, traditional houses of Cycladic style, traditional restaurants by the seaside, and some refined bars to have a drink at...

Hi ! I believe Chios is the best for you.
Villages built on plains or rocks and others near the coast, full of smells and sounds of the fresh wind and the deep blue sea of the Aegean are hugging around the island. Chios is a hospitable island and his residents are polite and peaceful, ready tο welcome with love and kindness every new visitors.
In the island there are many beautiful and clean sandy and pebbly beaches where you can enjoy your bath with your family and friends or by yourself in a more isolated coast. Moreover, there are many good places to visit, villages with historic monasteries, castles and, many other opportunities. Those who like sports can go sailing or climbing.
Especially in the summertime the weather is often windy and under these circumstances you can find your self in one of the islands' beaches and do sailing and wind-surfing. At the end of the day you can have a good time in the nightclubs, restaurants and cafeterias of the island, enjoying your drink with music and good company.

I think my island of Symi should fit the profile. I mean sometimes in the height of the season, with the day trippers it can get a bit annoying, but I think you'll experience that everywhere. Symi In May/June and Sept/October is lovely if you like a quieter holiday. We have the most beautiful harbour with classic Venetian facades that people just fall in love with from their first sight from the ferry. We have a famous Monastery of Panormitis which is not only beautiful but many commit to a pilgrimag every year to see, and a beautiful village to exlpore with ruins and old windmills and many historic sights. You can fly into Rhodes and then take a ferry to Symi.

As you probably already understood the problem with Greek islands is not where to find what will fit your mood/stage in life/financial status etc; but the sheer variety of offerings... Hope you have a lovely time wherever you decide to go (all of the answers are spot on) just remember that in Greece a smile can get you a long way and a kalimera ( good day to you! pronounced kaleemera!) will always start a stream of warm enthousiastic greek that will be too fast to fathom...
Happy Holidays!

Although I'm an islander, to my mind the best place to your requirements is the region of Mani situated on the south west third leg of Peloponnese.
Unspoiled traditional region of Greece with many places of interest close by. Olympia and Pylos two of them, easily accessed from there. Kalamata on the other side, Venetian castles on Koroni and Methoni. In facts it has everything except of large numbers of tourists.A region that is not met in any other European country , quite unique of its kind.
Sites below may help you to get an idea. Any way whatever you decide have a nice holiday

All Greek island have their advantages. I like Kalymnos.
Quiet, inexpensive, great food, great beaches, great
nightlife. Right across from Kos which is a major tourist
island, and expensive if you want to check it out.

chios is the place for you. fits all your specs. homer & helen of troy both stopped at chios. at least one of delphis temples was constructed of marble from chios. columbus "discovered" the island. has a small historic village w/ a lot of black & white marble like the italian churches. has a monastary, beaches, tavernas, fig trees... meets your specs. you can fly in from athens on a smaller plane. the ferry goes to other islands & over to turkey for day trips. have fun!!!!

Kythira is a good idea.
Agia Pelagia is pleasant.
Avlemonas is small & beatiful.
Kapsali in the south is probably what will suite you the best.
The island is small and beautiful; people are gentle & tourism is still at an acceptable level.
